The European Central Bank has selected Nexi, in a temporary grouping with Deutsche Telekom, as one of two network service providers for the digital euro, under a ten-year contract. The award follows a negotiated procurement for connectivity.
The network will interconnect the data centres that host the Digital Euro Service Platform and give payment service providers and national central banks access to it. The scope covers the digital euro pilot and a mediation platform for the end-to-end exchange of digital euro transactions, designed to scale with transaction volumes and peak usage.
Telefónica, with Minsait, is reported as the second provider, with a contract set to begin in May 2027. Nexi CEO Bernardo Mingrone called the award an important milestone that confirms Nexi's role as an infrastructure partner in European payments.
