Episode 7 - Interview with Anthony Danon
In this episode I sit down with Anthony Danon, founder and CEO of Rerail, a pre-seed and seed VC fund that aims to use the experience of many fintech operators and founders to back new ventures in the industry.
On the podcast
Anthony started as a fintech operator building credit risk models in invoice financing and has been an early-stage investor since late 2014.
Anthony led early deals in companies including TrueLayer and Primer.
Rerail is a $20 million angel fund investing at pre-seed and seed, focused on Europe but global, backed mainly by founders and operators.
Anthony started raising Rerail at the start of February and reached a first close just above target at the end of July, while spending 30–40% of his time on it.
Anthony's highlighted investments include Atlar, Pivot and Hyperline, where he invested before Index's seed round.
Anthony committed to Primer two days after meeting its founders.
Payments are becoming more local through domestic real-time networks such as UPI, PIX, Blik and iDEAL, while stablecoins, highlighted by Stripe's acquisition of Bridge, are making them more global.
One vertical SaaS company in his portfolio takes about 4% on payments it bundles, while Stripe charges it about 0.5%.
The strongest opportunities now are AI-led operating systems for traditional industries such as restaurants, construction and dentistry, and for intermediated markets such as wealth advisers and insurance or mortgage brokers.
Many financial institutions that appear to adopt AI still run it behind OpenAI's service agreements, mainly for marketing; it is very early.
